Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) Trailblazer Award

The Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) Trailblazer Award is dedicated to developing novel statistical and research design methodology for clinical and translational science. Frontiers encourages applications involving graduate students in all BERD disciplines.

We will begin accepting applications for the 2020-2021 BERD Trailblazer Awards in Fall 2019. If you have questions please contact us at Frontiers-info@kumc.edu or 913-588-6290.

A total of $50,000 each year is available and awards may pay for software, databases, faculty release time, a graduate student assistant or other appropriately justified expenses. Funds may not be used for investigator travel. Support for study team personnel will be considered. Budget total maximum is $25K; lesser amounts than the $25K maximum are acceptable and encouraged.

Proposals should generally include the following sections: background, significance, specific aims, innovation/benefit and approach. There are no page requirements, but succinct protocols are encouraged. Generally, four to six pages in length is adequate.

Indirect/Facilities and Administration costs are not allowed for Frontiers Trailblazer Awards. If applicable, projects that are IRB approved are encouraged; projects ready to submit to IRB for approval are allowed. IRB documentation is required. Proposals for a Frontiers BERD Trailblazer Award will be reviewed by the KUMC Department of Biostatistics External Advisory Board for scientific merit. Scores will be forwarded to Frontiers leadership for funding decisions.

All funds awarded for 2019-2020 must be spent by June 30, 2020.
